To discount or not to discount?
A little guide to help you decide!
If you’ve ever been asked for a discount, you’ll know it’s a tricky question. On the one hand, you’d love to please them, and you really do want them to buy from you. On the other hand, you’ll be making less money than usual.
So how do you decide?
There are two points you should consider:
1. How desperate are you?
I’ve been there too. When rent is due in three days and I don’t have enough — then yes, I have in the past gone with a lower price than normal, because I needed the client to say yes. I needed the money, and I needed it fast.
When you are desperate, relax the rules a little. But whatever you do, do not sound desperate! Make it sound like you genuinely want to help them, and if they can’t afford the full price you’re willing to make an exception for them etc.
A word of caution.
If you’re desperate on a pretty much constant basis, you’ll struggle to run your business properly. If this desperation is happening more than say once or twice a month, re-assess whether you can afford to do this, or if you should just get a job.
But even so, you need to consider the second point:
